Choosing a Baby Crib
The process of designing a nursery is an exciting experience, but selecting a crib is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. The crib in which your baby sleeps will have a major impact on their health and development whether it's the style of the slats or the mattress's height.
Examine the crib's hardware frequently. best rated cribs and nails may get loose over time. Avoid placing your crib near blinds or drapes that hang on the ceiling, as they could create the risk of strangulation to your baby.
Size
Size is an important factor to take into consideration when buying a crib. The crib should be big enough to accommodate a sleeping baby, but compact enough that you can be able to reach them easily and take care of them. It should also be durable enough to stand up to the wear and tear of daily use.
The majority of cribs are made from wood or metal, and the majority of them have the slatted sides. These features let caregivers see the baby from various angles and encourage airflow. Cribs are utilized from birth until the child is about two years old. older, at which point they will have to be moved to the toddler bed.
Most cribs are equipped with a mattress height that can be adjusted to meet your baby's development. The lowest setting works best for newborns. The highest setting is ideal for babies who are able to sit up or crawl. Be sure to check the inside of your crib to be sure that the mattress fits because the slatted style of a lot of cribs leave tiny gaps that could be dangerous for your baby.
good cribs offer mattresses and cribs that are not standard sizes, but have the same safety standards. These include bassinets for infants, portable cribs, and play yards. These cribs are smaller than the standard ones and come with rigid or mesh sides.
Review the manufacturer's guidelines to determine the recommended mattress size if you choose a crib that isn't standard. There may be specific requirements that differ from the standard crib mattress size of 28 inches wide and 52 inches long. Also, you should examine the space between the crib mattress and the crib to make sure that it is not greater than 1 inch. This is the maximum safe distance.
A waterproof cover can protect your baby's bed from accidents and spills. Look for one with an antimicrobial layer that helps to reduce bacteria and a hypoallergenic barrier that eliminates allergens.
If you're considering a crib with drop sides, be aware that they were associated with 32 infant deaths between 2000 and 2010 and have been banned in the US since 2011. Even if you plan to purchase or get a crib with drop sides ensure that you remove it when your child is 35 inches or has the ability to climb out.
Safety
A crib for your baby is the most secure place for your child. It's a space for them to rest but also a space where you can keep them close and check on them often. There are numerous crib models and brands on the market. However, all must meet certain safety requirements. The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets these standards to ensure that cribs are safe for babies.
Before you place your child in the crib ensure that the crib is clean and free of dust and dander. Also, remove any toys or stuffed animals that may fall out of the crib. Don't put any blankets or pillows within the crib. They can lead to the suffocation of children. Make use of a fitted sheet and mattress covers instead.
Some commenters suggested that cribs should be required to meet formaldehyde emission standards laid out in the Formaldehyde Standards for Wood Products Act (Pub. L. 112-199) and that cribs made of composite wood should be tested for compliance. The CPSC has determined that, although these requirements do NOT directly apply to cribs or other furniture made of composite wood, it is a good idea to insist on compliance with this important law.
Other commenters suggested that the requirement that fasteners be tightened again between dynamic tests should be included in the crib standard that is being developed. We strongly disagree with this suggestion. The dynamic tests - such as the shake test and the vertical mattress support test - are designed to mimic and speed up the use and abuse of cribs by children. Loose screws are the second most common cause of fatal accidents in cribs.
Other comments were based on EWS incident data. These data indicate that the two most frequent crib hazards are unsafe mattresses and drop-sides. We have decided to concentrate our attention on these concerns and include the performance standards already included in the existing mandatory standard. By incorporating them by reference, we can ensure that safety in cribs is maintained consistently and efficiently.
